TL;DR

OpenTubeX is an open source YouTube client that lets you watch ad-free without Google tracking your subscriptions, history, or viewing activity. It replaces YouTube Premium for users who want privacy and data ownership together, not just ad removal, since your library stays on your device and cross-device sync can be end-to-end encrypted. Licensed under AGPL-3.0, it runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and experimentally on iOS. Best for privacy-conscious individuals who want to de-Google their video consumption without paying for a proprietary subscription.

who it's for

Who OpenTubeX is for#

Privacy-conscious YouTube viewers wanting to exit Google's tracking stack

OpenTubeX removes Google's JavaScript from the playback path, keeps library data local, and makes ad removal the default rather than a paid feature. For viewers who have accepted that using YouTube means being tracked and want a practical exit, this client delivers most of the everyday YouTube experience without the data collection.

Skip if:

You rely on YouTube features that require a Google account, such as commenting, live chat participation, or purchases. OpenTubeX cannot log you into Google and does not support those features.

Users who want per-channel control over what they watch

Subscription profiles let you group channels into focused feeds, for example separating news from entertainment. Per-channel speed and quality settings, daily video limits, and SponsorBlock exemptions let you tune the experience at a granular level rather than applying global preferences.

Skip if:

You primarily rely on YouTube's recommendation engine rather than curated subscriptions. OpenTubeX's optional local recommendation ranking is a separate system from YouTube's algorithm and may surface different results.

Android users avoiding Google Play and app-level tracking

The Android build is distributed through F-Droid and Obtainium, skipping the Google Play Store entirely. It targets Android 8.0 and later with full support. A Lite variant is available for storage-constrained devices, though it omits yt-dlp and FFmpeg, so downloads are unavailable in that build.

Skip if:

You want iOS parity today. The iOS and iPadOS builds are experimental and may have significant limitations compared to the desktop or Android versions.

Desktop users who want a session-persistent YouTube workspace

Tabbed browsing, a queue builder, a mini player that stays visible while browsing subscriptions, and session restore on relaunch make OpenTubeX function more like a browser workspace than a single-window video player. Theme support and deep layout customization let you shape the interface around how you actually watch.

Skip if:

You do most of your YouTube watching casually on a phone. Desktop-oriented features like tabs, queue management, and session restore matter less for a mobile-first viewing pattern.

the problem

The problem it solves#

YouTube's web interface tracks everything you watch, how long you watch, what you skip, which channels you visit, and what you search, all tied to a persistent ad profile whether or not you have an account. Google uses this data to serve targeted ads and build behavioral profiles that follow you across its properties.

For users who want to reduce Google's tracking surface, the standard options are limited. YouTube Premium removes ads but leaves all tracking in place. Browser extensions block ads at the page level but cannot prevent YouTube's JavaScript from reading device characteristics and assigning tracking identifiers. A privacy-respecting client that bypasses the page JavaScript entirely is the only way to watch without feeding the tracking pipeline.

how OpenTubeX solves it

How it solves it#

Ad-free playback via built-in extractor

OpenTubeX bypasses YouTube's page JavaScript by fetching video and metadata through its own built-in extractor or an optional Invidious API instance. The result is playback without the advertising scripts, trackers, and fingerprinting that ship with the standard YouTube website. You can also connect to an external proxy like Tor to reduce what YouTube servers observe.

SponsorBlock and DeArrow integration

SponsorBlock lets you skip specific in-video segment types such as sponsor reads, intros, and intermissions, with per-channel exemption control. DeArrow replaces clickbait thumbnails and titles with crowdsourced neutral alternatives. Both run client-side against community-contributed segment databases with no dependency on YouTube's own data.

End-to-end encrypted sync with a self-hostable server

When you want subscriptions and history across devices, OpenTubeX can sync selected library categories to a compatible server. Enhanced-privacy sync encrypts the data on your device before it leaves, so the server operator cannot read it. The sync server is open source and designed to run on your own infrastructure.

Subscription profiles and per-channel playback settings

Group subscriptions into named profiles so you can switch between focused feeds without separate accounts. Set playback speed, quality, and other preferences per channel, and they apply automatically whenever you open that channel's videos. Daily video limits per channel let you control how much of a feed you consume.

Tabs, queue, and Picture-in-Picture mini player

Open multiple videos in tabs and build a queue without leaving the current video. The mini player keeps playback going while you browse other channels or check your subscriptions. Desktop session state is restored on the next launch so you pick up where you left off.

Cross-platform: desktop, Android, and experimental iOS

Installable on Windows 10 and later, macOS 12 and later, and mainstream Linux distributions through packages for Debian/Ubuntu APT, Fedora COPR/RPM, openSUSE RPM, Flatpak, Snap, AUR, and Nix. Android 8.0 and later are supported via an F-Droid repository and Obtainium. iOS and iPadOS 17.4 and later have experimental builds.

strengths · trade-offs

Strengths and trade-offs#

Strengths

  • Library stays local by defaultSubscriptions, playlists, history, and app settings are stored on your device, not on a remote server. No account registration is required to subscribe to channels or maintain a library. When you choose to enable sync, you decide which data categories to include and whether to use end-to-end encrypted or plaintext transfer.
  • AGPL-3.0: inspect the code and verify the privacy claimsThe client, the sync server, and the Flatpak and Snap packaging scripts are all published under AGPL-3.0. Anyone can read the source, confirm that no analytics payload is sent, and build from source. The README explicitly describes the privacy threat model and what request metadata is and is not hidden.
  • Broad install surface without app store dependencyAvailable through WinGet on Windows, Homebrew on macOS, and native package repos for Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, and Arch Linux, plus Flatpak, Snap, and Nix. Android distribution uses F-Droid and Obtainium, deliberately avoiding the Google Play Store. Each GitHub Releases package includes SHA-256 checksums for verification.

Trade-offs

  • -Currently in Beta with 50 open issuesOpenTubeX is under active development and self-describes as Beta. At the time of this writing, 50 issues were open on GitHub. Some features differ between the desktop and mobile builds. Users who need a fully polished experience across all platforms should expect rough edges and missing capabilities while the project matures.
  • -IP address visible to YouTube unless a VPN or Tor proxy is usedOpenTubeX does not load YouTube's page JavaScript, which removes browser-based fingerprinting. However, it does not hide the IP address making video and metadata requests. YouTube, an Invidious instance operator, or your network provider can still observe which YouTube resources your IP is fetching. The README recommends a VPN or Tor for users with a stronger threat model.
  • -Enhanced-privacy sync requires a compatible self-hosted serverEnd-to-end encrypted sync only works with a server that supports the enhanced-privacy sync protocol. Legacy sync servers, and the standard sync path if you configure an incompatible server, transmit library data in plaintext. Running the encrypted path requires setting up and maintaining a compatible server on your own infrastructure.
versus alternatives

OpenTubeX vs alternatives#

OpenTubeX vs YouTube Premium

YouTube Premium and OpenTubeX both remove ads from YouTube playback, but they differ in how they achieve it, what data is collected in the process, and who controls the experience.

FeatureOpenTubeXYouTube Premium
LicenseAGPL-3.0Proprietary
CostFreePaid subscription
Self-hostingYes (sync server)No
Removes adsYesYes
Google trackingReduced (no page JavaScript)Full Google infrastructure
Google account requiredNoYes
Library data storageLocal by defaultGoogle's servers
Encrypted syncYes (enhanced-privacy option)No
Offline downloadsYes (via yt-dlp, desktop and Android)Yes (in-app)

YouTube Premium removes ads and enables background play and downloads, but keeps Google's full tracking infrastructure in place. Your watch history, subscriptions, and viewing patterns are still analyzed server-side and tied to your Google account.

OpenTubeX is the better choice when your goal is privacy alongside ad removal. By bypassing YouTube's page JavaScript, it eliminates browser-based fingerprinting and ad serving in one step. Your library stays on your device, and the optional end-to-end encrypted sync keeps it that way across devices. There is no subscription fee.

YouTube Premium still has a practical edge in specific situations. It works directly in YouTube's official apps, so features like comments, live chat, community posts, and YouTube Music are available without compromise. If you rely on those social or music features, or need Chromecast integration with no setup, the official client with Premium handles that more reliably than a third-party app.

OpenTubeX is currently in Beta with 50 open issues. Users who cannot tolerate any disruption to their YouTube workflow, or who need full access to YouTube's social and music features, will find YouTube Premium a more consistent experience for now.

FAQ#

Is OpenTubeX completely free to use?

Yes. OpenTubeX is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and free to download and use. There is no subscription, no premium tier, and no account registration required. Ad-free playback, SponsorBlock, and local library storage are all available without payment.

Does OpenTubeX require a Google account?

No. You can subscribe to channels, maintain playlists, and save history without signing in to Google. All library data is stored locally on your device by default. Features that require Google authentication, such as commenting and live chat participation, are not supported.

How does OpenTubeX remove ads if it still connects to YouTube?

OpenTubeX fetches video and metadata through its own extractor or an Invidious proxy, bypassing the YouTube web page and its advertising JavaScript. Because the standard ad-serving scripts never run, ads are not loaded. Your IP address is still visible to YouTube's servers unless you use a VPN or Tor proxy.

Can I sync my subscriptions across devices?

Yes. OpenTubeX supports syncing subscriptions, history, and other library data to a configured sync server. Enhanced-privacy sync encrypts data on your device before uploading, so the server never holds your data in readable form. The sync server is open source and can be self-hosted; using a third-party legacy sync server would transmit data in plaintext.

Is OpenTubeX a fork of FreeTube?

Yes. OpenTubeX originated as a fork of FreeTube and is now independently developed and supported. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by the FreeTube project. The two clients have diverged in features and development direction since the fork.
