Commercial Zi Wei Dou Shu platforms provide polished web applications with AI-powered readings, user accounts, and managed infrastructure. The open source Ziwei Doushu engine is the underlying chart calculation layer: it generates the palace structure, star placements, and pattern judgments, but does not bundle the interpretation text or the production UI.

The open source engine is the better choice when you need to audit chart placement logic against classical texts, build a custom interpretation layer, integrate charting into a larger TypeScript application, or train a specialized AI model on Zi Wei Dou Shu data. The CC BY 4.0 dataset is the only large-scale Zi Wei Dou Shu interpretation corpus with a license that permits commercial AI training.
The team's own commercial platform (metisziwei.com, documented in the README) illustrates the gap: its chart board component is 1,334 lines versus 285 in the open source demo; its insight panel is 5,088 lines versus 467. Commercial platforms are the better choice when you need AI-powered narrative readings without building a prompt layer, a polished user interface for non-technical users, or user account and payment management without building those systems yourself.
